Being rejected from receiving the only social support grant available to unemployed individuals can be difficult. However, individuals who have been rejected have the right to submit an appeal, which could result in them receiving the social support mechanism.

The Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, also known as the R350 grant, is a critical relief measure available to unemployed people between the ages of 18 and 59 years old living in South Africa.

You can apply for the R350 grant by submitting an application to the South African Social Security Agency ). Your application will be considered and will be provided with a decision. You can view the details of your application by doing a status check on your Sassa applications.

If Sassa declines your R350 grant application, you have the right to submit an appeal if you disagree with Sassa’s decision. Appeals must be submitted to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA).

Why Was The Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress Grant Introduced?

When the Covid-19 pandemic spread across the world most countries followed the example of China – which had dealt with the virus by imposing lockdowns on the population. It was recognised immediately that the poorest members of society were the ones who would suffer the most from the lockdowns. The Social Relief of Distress grant was criticised by many for only being R350, but for the recipients it was a lifeline to help provide at least the basic food requirements.
